History was made on December 20, 1998 when 27 year old Nigeian born Nkem
Chukwu, gave birth to the world’s first surviving octuplets in Houston,
Texas, United States. The octuplets born prematurely at six months
consisted of six girls and two boys. The Chukwu octuplets became the
first set of octuplets (eight “twins”)born in the United States in
recorded history.

One of the twins was born on December 8, after which doctors managed to
stop Chukwu’s labor and give the remaining babies nearly two more weeks
in the womb. The smallest of the octuplets, Odera, however died a week
after birth which left seven of them, two boys and five girls. Before
the birth of their octuplets, Nkem and her husband Iyke Louis Udobi had
been waiting on the Lord for children for about 10 years. They went on to
have another daughter.
As both parents were of Igbo ancestry, the babies were named as
follows:Chukwuebuka Nkemjika,Chidinma Anulika, Chinecherem Nwabugwu,
Chimaijem Otto, Chijindu Chidera, Chukwubuikem Maduabuchi, Chijioke
Chinedum and Chinagorom Chidiebere. The octuplets will be seventeen in
December.
According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest multiple
birth was nine babies in Sydney, Australia, in 1971 but only six
survived.
